With a body of work informed by a biographical experience marked by historical and geographical fractures, Manuel Mathieu has developed an extensive multidisciplinary practice which began with painting before integrating ceramics, installations, drawing, weaving and film. Through recognisable, powerful and multisensory language, his work intertwines abstraction and figuration, exploring what escapes representation to engage the viewer in an interpretative participation based on immersion and memory. Trauma, spiritual quest, and suffering along with an element of nostalgia emerge at the centre, in a field of human proximity and subterranean urgencies.
