MARCO OSPINA

1912, Bogotá, Colombia
1983, Bogotá, Colombia

A painter, writer, plastic artist, critic and teacher who was considered the first Colombian abstract artist, Marco Ospina was a key figure in the development of modern art in Colombia. Nature, abstraction and the poetic and conceptual opposition between these two are the cornerstones of his work. In the 1950s, his most fruitful period, Ospina constructed rhythmic undulations and geometric forms whose most surprising ingredient was the flat, vibrant color that provided solid support to the figures, a practice that revealed sincere admiration for Mondrian’s rigorous style.
