MARGARITA AZURDIA

1931, Antigua, Guatemala
1998, Guatemala City

Self-taught, and known as Margot Fanjul, Azurdia established herself in 1963 with her first solo exhibition, embarking on the path of an irreverent, experimental career. In the 1960s, she made high-impact abstract paintings, some of which reflected indigenous textile design. The Asta 104 series, which highlighted Azurdia’s constant investigation of human identity in the cosmos, earned her an honorable mention at the 10th Bienal de São Paulo in 1969.
