MOHAMMAD EHSAEI

BORN 1939, Qazvin, Iran
LIVES&WORKS Tehran, Iran, and Vancouver, Canada

Celebrated for his calligraphy which combines traditional techniques and the modern style of graphic arts, Ehsaei refined an aesthetic language inspired by international artistic movements and unique in the way it transformed traditional Persian writing into pure abstraction. His work falls into two categories: the “calligraphic paintings,” influenced by structural calculation and traditional scripts observed in Islamic architecture, and the “eternal alphabet,” in which free brushwork gives the painting a more dynamic pace.
