OSMOND WATSON

1934, Kingston, Jamaica
2005, Kingston, Jamaica

His paintings and sculptures focus on the cultural roots of his country, rendering its complexity, wealth, and contradictions. Folk cultural heritage from Africa has special relevance in his art, like Jonkonnu dance and Rastafari. Watson is particularly attentive to the downtrodden, the poor, the suffering. His aesthetics are the result of the combination of painting and sculpting on wood and found objects, like plastic mirrors and plastic jewellery, which elevate these mundane objects into dignified pieces of art.
