When he began working as a photographer he aimed his lens at the social reality of the post-war period, echoing the cinematic aesthetics of Italian neorealism. UNESCO commissioned him to tour Latin America photographing the modern architecture of the continent, but at the same time recording the daily life of the inhabitants of its cities and suburbs. The description of human reality, of social contradictions and of political tensions remains his principal interest.
