RAM KUMAR

1924, Shimla, India
2018, Delhi, India

Postcolonial writer and artist Ram Kumar was one of the most important Indian abstract painters. He studied in Paris with Fernand Léger and the artistic movements of the early 1900s were crucial in his education, even though the Indian tradition was always extremely important in his work. A 1960 visit to the holy city of Varanasi was a turning point in his style, which from then on became increasingly abstract and vibrant.
