A painter and illustrator who was among the first to join the post-revolution Mexican muralist movement, Roberto Montenegro left a significant mark with his notable murals, including those created in the former monastery of San Pedro and San Pablo. Montenegro dedicated most of his career, however, to illustration, publishing and portraiture, as well as the promotion of Mexican crafts and folk art. His work reflects the culture of Mexico, mixing popular folklore and indigenous and pre-Hispanic influences with elements of the European avant-garde.
