RUBEM VALENTIM

1922, Salvador, Brazil
1991, São Paulo, Brazil

A painter and a sculptor, his first exhibition outside his native Brazil took place in Italy in 1965. Valentim used different art media to express the symbolism inspired by Afro-Brazilian religions, namely Candomblé and Umbanda: their tools, the physical structure of terreiros, places of worship… Symbols show up in his art as signs and images created by a sober aestheticization of structured shapes.
