Known for his minimalist landscapes, Saliba Douaihy was one of four distinguished Lebanese artists along with Moustafa Farroukh, Cesar Gemayel and Omar Onsi referred to as the “Big Four”. After studying in Paris and a period in New York in the 1950s, he developed a distinctive style influenced by Abstract Expressionism and glass painting. Characterized by bright colors and geometric shapes, his paintings depict Lebanese landscapes in a unique way, often giving the impression of seeing them through a telescope, and he kept his obsession with landscapes alive even in his most abstract paintings. Among his most significant projects was the creation in 1978 of 65 glass paintings for the Church of the Lady of Lebanon on Jamaica Plain, near Boston.
