Descended from generations of Ṣàngó priests, Sangódáre Ghadègesin Ajalá was the most important Nigerian creator of Batik work, an expression of sacred art linked to the Yorùbá tribal culture and pushed out of the indigenous community by colonialism and the imposition of the monotheistic Muslim and Christian religions. His extraordinary artistic legacy communicates the complexity of Yorùbá wisdom, cosmology and rituals, experienced firsthand by the artist through spiritual practice.
