SEMIHA BERKSOY

1919, Istanbul, Turkey
2004, Istanbul, Turkey

After experiencing success as an opera singer in Berlin in the 1930s, she was forced to return to Turkey at the outbreak of the Second World War. A self-taught artist, she began to paint, choosing a style of expressive immediacy with urgent brushwork and brutal formal simplifications. Like pages of an intimate diary, her work tells of her life, her fears, and her great unrequited love for the poet Nâzım Hikmet.
