Although he only began his painting career at the age of fifty-three, former coffee merchant Sénèque Obin, Philomé’s younger brother, was able to benefit from his brother’s artistic guidance, which strongly influenced his style. In addition to scenes of daily life, Obin specialized in historical subjects, Masonic ceremonies and portraits of revolutionary generals. Unlike his contemporaries he used pure colors and loved black, and his paintings stand out from those of his brother for their greater formal freedom, which enriches his work by adding a poetic dimension.
