Shalom Kufakwatenzi affirms freedom of expression in art and life first and foremost by using fabric, a material that is familiar and accessible to the local community, to compose soft sculptures and installations of different sizes that mix textures and coloured pieces in a way antithetical to traditional plasticism. She subsequently tried her hand at new media, in particular photography, video and performance. In the work that sprang from this new approach, her interest in identity – starting naturally from her own – becomes explicit, focusing specifically on gender diversity and the condition of women in Zimbabwe.
