A self-taught artist, he was introduced to painting by Walter Battiss. He only began to paint seriously in 1952, producing portraits, still lifes and landscapes, as well as compositions inspired by Bushman cave paintings. His still lifes, characterized by an extraordinary use of chiaroscuro, depict compositions of pumpkins, herbs, stones, incense, feathers and objects related to divination, which emphasize healing, rebirth and the continuity of existence in a mystical and profoundly African dimension.
