SUSANNE WENGER

Graz, Austria, 1915
Osogbo, Nigeria, 2009

Wenger studied art in Graz and Vienna, Austria. As an adult, she decided to move to Nigeria, which became her adoptive country. Here, her art interests immediately get overwhelmed by her involvement in traditional African religions. As soon as she moved there, in 1949, she began working to revive traditional Yoruba religion in Nigerian communities that distanced themselves from it under the influence of western religions and cultures. The artist also worked to preserve the Osun Wood, in the Osogbo region of Nigeria, which she populated with sculptures made by her and other artists.
