UNICA ZÜRN

BORN
LIVES&WORKS
1916, Berlin, Germany
1970, Paris, France

Writer, artist, lover and docile model of her partner Hans Bellmer, she will end up identifying herself with the transposition of the artist’s desires, embodying his Poupée, an artificial woman, an assembly of plastic and hidden passions. Zürn’s research is to be placed between Surrealism and Abstractionism, between automatism and geometric precision.  Her drawings are amorphous creatures, accurately drawn in very fine lines, a world made of nightmares, chimeras and jellyfish with large human eyes chasing each other in a frantic and grotesque dream. Drawing and writing was her own way to calm down her delusions and to find a fulfilling dimension to cope with her dissociative episodes and megalomaniac and obsessive thoughts.
