An influential Kenyan-American artist, Wangechi Mutu is known for the collages, sculptures and videos through which she addresses themes such as identity, gender and racism, often in dialogue with Afrofuturist imagery. Hybrid and surrealist figures, together with bronze sculptures and immersive installations, blend organic forms, Kenyan symbols and mythological references, questioning standards of beauty and power relations. In 2025 she presented her solo exhibition Black Soil Poems at the Galleria Borghese and the Casa del Cinema in Rome, featuring sculptures and films that explore Black femininity, consumerism, environmental degradation, mythology, science fiction and processes of decolonization.
