YINKA SHONIBARE

BORN London, UK, 1962
LIVES&WORKS London

The recognisable use of wax fabric in Yinka Shonibare’s reinterpretation of icons of Western art and literature provides the first key to understanding his vast and interdisciplinary artistic production, which plays on the recognition-estrangement effect. Perceived as a typically African artifact, wax is the product of the Dutch industrialization of Batik and objectifies the history of exchanges between the West and Africa, proposing an alternative narrative.
