Through heterogeneous and often collaborative artistic and research practices, Yoshiko Shimada has developed a body of work that spans radical pedagogy, archive, activism and spirituality, highlighting the interconnections between Japanese modernity, patriarchy and forms of discrimination in the post-war context. Her work focuses on socio-political tensions and historical amnesia, investigating the complexity of gender roles and sexual and cultural identities in relation to Japanese colonialism and imperialism.
