It is nigh-on impossible not to think water when you think Venice. The two are paired indissolubly in anyone’s imagination. Water designs the city’s landscapes, highlights its architecture, tells its story, and is the second half of a millennia-old pact of coexistence and mutual respect. Malibran Theatre celebrates this bond with Acquaprofonda (lit. ‘deep water’), an opera by Giovanni Sollima on a libretto by Giancarlo De Cataldo that sold out in 2023. Seeing its success, especially with the younger crowd, more dates have been added for January 2025. The story starts on a beach, where we’ll find a humble cottage and an awe-inducing factory. The protagonist is Serana, a brave girl that will save the world from the incoming threat thanks to the help of her father, her friends, and a mysterious, giant sea creature. School classes are introduced to the opera with an educational segment that will encourage students to interact with the show and reflect more deeply on the themes of environmental preservation and sea pollution.
