Yanomami indigenous artist from Sheroana, a small community of the Upper Orinoco River in the Venezuelan Amazon, Hakihiiwei works mainly on handmade drawing papers that he makes according to ancestral tradition with native fibres such as Shiki and Abaca. His practice and drawings aim at safeguarding the cosmogony and oral memory of his people. Hakihiiwe’s work is a personal interpretation of Yanoma tradition and identity; his drawings and paintings speak of rituals and beliefs, of observations of the jungle suggesting some concerns for the ecosystem.
