ANU PÕDER

BORN
LIVES&WORKS
1947, Kanepi, Estonia
2013, Tallinn, Estonia

For a long time relatively unknown outside of her native Estonia, Anu Põder alternated teaching and sculpting throughout her life. Contrary to the mainstream Soviet sculpture of the time, she chose lighter, softer materials for her creations, and worked mostly on her own, with no outside assistance. Her art depicts body parts and body-like contraptions that are meant to either welcome the subject in their embrace or repulse them in a sort of mirrored monstrosity.
