Markus Stenz at the head of the La Fenice Theater Orchestra conducts music by Haydn and Richard Strauss, in the next concert of the 2022-2023 Symphony Season, scheduled at the Fenice. The German master competes in particular with the Symphony in G major Hob. I:94 dictates The Surprise of Franz Joseph Haydn, the third of his London symphonies; and with the symphonic poem Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) op. 40 by Richard Strauss, which will be performed by Roberto Baraldi as solo violinist The program will open with the third of the twelve London symphonies by Franz Joseph Haydn, the Symphony in G major Hob. I: 94 known as The Surprise (1792). Freed from the bonds with the Esterházy princes, Franz Joseph Haydn arrived in London in 1791: received with exceptional warmth from the first concert, he composed twelve extraordinary symphonies, some of which received evocative nicknames: Surprise, Miracle, Military, The Clock, Drum Roll. In the case of Symphony No. 94, the two names by which it is known (The surprise in Anglo-Saxon countries and Colpo di timpano in German-speaking ones) derive from the fortissimo of the whole orchestra reinforced by the tympanum that characterizes the second movement. Performed for the first time on 23 March 1792 under the composer’s direction, it consists of a Vivace assai preceded by an introductory Adagio cantabile, a Theme with variations, a Minuet reminiscent of the German Ländler, and a snappy Allegro di molto concluding. In conjunction with the concert directed by Markus Stenz, the in-depth meetings on the musical programs are renewed: the first on Friday 30 June 2023 will in fact be preceded by a free-entry conference in which the concert program will be illustrated from 19.20 to 19.40 .
