This is the programme curated by Isola Edipo in cooperation with Venice Days and Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. In short, the Amazon opens to the Venice Film Festival. Gli occhi della foresta (lit. ‘the eyes of the forest’) is a special day dedicated to Yanomami filmmaker Morzaniel Ɨramari and dedicated to the film production of the Yanomami, one of the most notable Amazonian indigenous people. There are about 54,000 of them, they live in a region about 220,000 square kilometres large in the northern Amazon region straddling Brazil and Venezuela, are both hunters and gatherers as well as slash-and-burn farmers. Their territory amounts to some 1.5% of the planet’s rainforests.
Morzaniel Ɨramari got his education as a filmmaker thank to project Video nas Aldeias, also known as Video in the Villages Project, a Brazilian NGO that works on indigenous people empowerment via the audio/video industry. Ɨramari’s film is an immersion into his people’s shamanic universe, which he renders with grace, poetry, and vigour in their daily lives. His first movie, House of the Spirits – Xapiripë yanopë was about Watorikɨ, the ‘house of wind’. For the Yanomami, that is the place where spirits live. It is also Morzaniel Ɨramari’s birthplace.
