Oscar-winning Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car) will be awarded by the president of the Premio Film Impresa project Giampaolo Letta and by art director Mario Sesti for his film Evil Does not Exist, in the Main Competition at Venice.
The film will be distributed in Italy by Tucker and Teodora. The Special Award 2023 of the Premio Film Impresa project has been assigned to the filmmaker “for the courage and vibrant sensitivity he used to tell the story of the relationship between a business and the community it wants to establish itself. The complexity and difficulty of this relationship won’t prevent Hamaguchi to depict truthfully and deeply the reasons of both, making a protagonist, other than them, out of environment and nature”.
The film tells a story of a problematic, though needed conversation between the proponent of a project for a luxury camping resort in a village outside Tokyo and the community that lives there. There’s no animosity in the telling, only sensitivity and empathy.
“We decided to reward this film for the sincerity and authenticity it employs to describe a process that is an essential method for businesses all around the world: dialogue with territory” says Mario Sesti, art director of the award. Sesti also noted that “Hamaguchi has been able to draw expressivity from trees, leaves, animals, showing his rightful place in Japanese cinema which, with authors like Mizoguchi, Kurosawa, Kore’eda, has been able to make a character out of nature.
With his film Hamaguchi shows that nature is the main player in this game, and the addressee of both the people who live in it and the businesses that are established there”.
Premio Film Impresa is an idea and a project of Unindustria.
