The Venice Film Festival has always kept a crucial role in the art of showing cinema, and the Biennale is the absolute model. No other film festival around the world can boast, in their history, such a strong point. It saved the Venice Film Festival at its most difficult moments in its history – those weren’t few, as we’ll see later.
Behind the VFF, there is the Biennale, and there has always been Venice. Conversely, the Film Festival has always proudly worn this artistic badge of honour, even when it had to compromise with crowd-pleasing cinema, even when it couldn’t choose the individual participants, because they were chosen by their respective countries.
