A protagonist in the world’s best theatres, Charles Dutoit is one of the most sought-after orchestra conductors. He has been awarded two prestigious international awards: the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal in 2017, and the Una vita nella musica Award at the Fenice Theatre in Venice. A natural-born globetrotter, Dutoit is passionate about history, archaeology, politics, art, and architecture. To see him in Venice (on December 13 to 15) as a renowned guest of the current symphony season confirms our city is the perfect choice for a musical December of the highest level. Charles Dutoit will conduct a programme that is sure to entice us: it begins with Claude Debussy’s Petite Suite in Henri Büsser’s arrangement, Haydn’s Symphony no. 104 in E+, and Dvorˇák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, From the New World. The latter premiered in 1893 at the Carnegie Hall in New York and was met with enormous success right away. In the new world – America – Dvorˇák also studied Native American tradition and Black choral music.
