The 2023 Asolo Musica – Veneto Musica concert season will be enhanced by an extraordinary concert by lutenist Hopkinson Smith, invited to the Squero by the Cini Foundation and Asolo Musica. A great icon of early music, he is defined by the international press as the ‘supreme poet of the lute’ and ‘one of the most spectacular performers of our time’. Hopkinson Smith presents a captivating programme of lute music by Italian and French composers between the 15th and 16th centuries: Francesco Spinacino, Joan Ambrosio Dalza and Pierre Attaingnant. “This concert represents an opportunity to showcase the Venetian sensibility, an expression of the culture of the Dominant,” Smith explains, “the creativity, spontaneity and invention of the Venetian mind can also be found in the first Italian lute music from the early 16th century published here for Ottaviano Petrucci in 1507-1508. It will be a pleasure for me to return to the Island of San Giorgio for this occasion’.
