Our dear friend Figaro is back in town. The Fenice Theatre will welcome him in the much-appreciated staging directed by Bepi Morassi and conducted by Renato Palumbo. The Barber of Seville programme falls right at the height of the Venetian Carnival, on February 20 to March 4, with a costume ball to follow on March 1. Composed in only a few weeks on a libretto by Cesare Sterbini, itself adapted from a comedy piece, the opera premiered in Rome in 1816 and bombed–as happened to many an opera that later made it to the rung of legendary. Verdi himself wrote that: “the Barber, for its many real musical ideas, for comedic verve, and for its truthful declamation, is the best comic opera ever produced”. Rossini knew no greater success, and still today, it is the most famous comic opera in the world.
