Mere days after Bach’s Matthäus-Passion conducted by Ton Koopman, the Fenice Theatre celebrates Easter with Gustav Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony, with Myung-Whun Chung conducting. This Symphony No. 2 in C minor, featuring soprano, alto, mixed choir, and orchestra, will be performed by the acclaimed South Korean conductor with the Fenice’s resident orchestra and choir and by soprano Louise Alder and mezzo-soprano Danbi Lee. Two performances are scheduled for the 2024-25 Symphony Season, on April 18 and 19. Composed between 1888 and 1894, Mahler’s Resurrection symphony reflects his quest for a formal solution that conveys a message of secular redemption while capturing the complexity of personal and collective experiences. Its 1895 premiere received no warm welcome, but the performance of the completed work, later in the year, was eventually well-received.
