The 2023-2024 Symphony Season at the Fenice Theatre will open on December 9 and 10 together with guest conductor Robert Treviño, guiding the resident orchestra and choir in Mahler’s third symphony which, together with the second and fourth, was composed in the late 1800s. These came to be known as the Wunderhorn (magic horn) Cycle, due to the influence of the folk literature collection of the same name by Ludwig Achim von Arnim and Clemens Maria Brentano. Said influence is but one of the several extra-musical suggestions that characterizes Mahler’s Third. The influence of Nietzschean metamorphic vision is apparent even ignoring the words taken from Thus Spoke Zarathustra, in the contralto’s line, fourth movement.
