Cycle The Flaying of Marsyas has been inspired by Titian’s masterpiece of the same name, dated 1570-76 and today kept at the Archdiocese Museum in Kromeríž, Czechia. Mary Weatherford pays homage to the distinctive light of Venice and Titian’s original palette as well as Flashe paint and neon light to mimic the appearance of ancient canvas. Weatherford responds to Titian’s art by translating the violent character of the story in a more spontaneous form, also alluding to destiny, hubris, and the relationship between the human and the divine.
