Taking inspiration from a piece of seventeenth-century lace from the Burano Museum Collection where it is currently exhibited, Matthias Schaller has decided to examine one of the oldest and most prestigious Venetian skills and the multiple relationships, past and present, that bind this art to the lagoon city. Seven shots were taken of the three-meter-long piece of lace chosen which visually and conceptually represent the Sestieri: thanks to the weave, the structure of the lace transposes the ‘texture’ of the city while the dots become the streets and squares, creating a true urban fabric.
