In the late 1930s, Peggy Guggenheim was considered one of the sharpest collectors of surrealist art. In those years, the art lover grew familiar with the movement and especially with Max Ernst and André Breton. Over twenty artists and about sixty pieces – the focus of the exhibition is the unparalleled corpus of surrealist art belonging to the Peggy Guggenheim collection, from Giorgio De Chirico’s metaphysical art to iconic pieces such as Max Ernst’s Robing of the Bride, Victor Brauner’s Lovers, to the occult symbolism of the late Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo.
