Wallace Chan is after spectacularity – not by merely using a single piece, but using the interdependence of many. Once taken apart, the integrity of the sculpture as a self-contained form is not there anymore, alluding to the fragility and imminent collapse of an established order. The operation symbolises social fragmentation and the uncertainty of our times. Totem is an installation that comprises many different pieces, all part of a single titanium sculpture, A Dialogue Between Materials and Time, Titans XIV, originally ten metres large, now broken up, with each piece placed around the Fondaco.
