Photography, sculpture, and video – the installation by Jonathas de Andrade (Maceió, Brazil, 1982) are based on a list of Brazilian traditional expressions about the human body. Andrade was inspired by science fairs visited as a child – in particular, a visit inside a large female model, Eva, in fibre and foam rubber. Eva had been exhibited all over Brazil in the 1980s, and afforded the experience of a journey inside the body. The artist’s work focuses on the world of labour and identity in the modern subject, especially in the Latin American context, and uses metaphors that range from nostalgia to eroticism and historical-political critique.
