The eminent interest of Niamh O’Malley is to investigate surfaces, the one element that allows objects and spaces to come into contact. Her art, mainly sculpture and moving-picture installations, explores the materiality of landscape and conceptual ideas that inform our perception of the surrounding environment via physical touch. Touch brings comfort, for it allows us to recognize and establish our presence in the world. O’Malley reflects on the way distance, both physical and symbolical, can be described, anchored, and contained.
