Based on rigorous research, Ilit Azoulay’s (b. 1972, Jaff-Tel Aviv; lives and works in Berlin) art is a mix of photography, architecture, sound, video, and performance. It integrates data with narration and alters photographic perspectives to reveal formerly invisible images and new points of view for the audience. Queendom is a series on the concept of sovereignty in art, while the title apparently indicates a reversal of pre-established customs. Azoulay also reconfigures its architectural orientation from West to East—away from a male-centred gaze to female empowerment, and from Eurocentric modernity to Middle Eastern contemporaneity.
