For the first time in Biennale history, a Romani artist has been chosen to represent a National Participation. In an abandoned hotel in her native mountain city of Zakopane, in southern Poland, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas (1978) worked on a monumental series of twelve quilts that ideally take after the Hall of Seasons at Palazzo Schifanoia in Ferrara, Italy. The drapery shows the mutual influence of Romani, Polish, and European cultures through scenes depicting the Romani migration around Europe and episodes of Romani history from a female perspective, as well as scenes of daily life.
