An established artist and the first black woman to represent the USA at Biennale, Simone Leigh pays homage to a long history of community and care of black women, with her sculptures exhibiting the female body in a re-elaboration of materials and processes of the traditions of the African diaspora. Her art practice blends figuration, abstraction, and architecture as it focuses on the inner lives of black women and on completing what Leigh calls an ‘incomplete archive’ of black feminist thought.
