Girjegumpi is the combination of two words from the Sámi language, spoken in the northernmost regions of Europe: gjiri, free, and gumpi, which is a small mobile hut, mounted on a sled, used by reindeer wranglers. Girjegumpi is the title of the project, the result of twenty years of research by architect and artist Joar Nango: a ‘nomadic’ archive that includes art, materials, design details, found items, and a library of over 500 volumes on Sámi architecture and design, ranging from traditional, vernacular architecture, activism, and decolonization.
