Segments of a life devoted to the search for beauty as a solution to the loss. This is what transpires from the videos and cine diaries of Jonas Mekas (Biržai, 1922 – New York, 2019). Mekas has imprinted his life on film for over seventy years, showing its most intimate sides. He chronicled the trauma of exile while maintaining an unwavering commitment to supporting the growth and institutional recognition of film. His commitment to cinema inspired other distinguished artists such as Martin Scorsese, Andy Warhol, and John Lennon.
In 2022 Director KD Davison released a documentary in honour of Mekas’ filmmaking, after spending the pandemic studying Mekas’ large archives. The result of Davison’s work is Fragments of Paradise, an immersive experience in the life of the godfather of avant-garde cinema.
