BDR BUREAU E CARTON123 ARCHITECTEN

WHERE Turin, Italy; Brussels, Belgium
PEOPLE Simona Della Rocca (b. Moncalieri, Italy, 1985), Alberto Bottero (b. Cuneo, Italy, 1984), Els Van Meerbeek (b. Leuven, Belgium, 1974), Joost Raes (b. Leuven, Belgium, 1979)

The two young studios (one based in Brussels, the other in Turin) won first prize at the Open Call OO4103, an important Flemish competition, to redesign a school compound in Zwevegem, Belgium. Their project shows a refined ability to manage matter and space and its intersections, and an approach to architecture that highlights the common identity of both studios: a lightness of touch that is also to be found in their individual works. In this Belgian school, we appreciate the idea of ‘open architecture’, a way to enjoy a generous, multi-disciplinary space that is traversed and influenced by lifestyles and learning practices that adhere to no given standard.
