BLAC SPACE

PEOPLE Kgaugelo Lekalakala (b. Mpumalanga, Republic of South Africa, 1994)

Kgaugelo Lekalakala grew up in her grandmother’s house in rural Seabe, Mpumalanga, a three-plus-hour drive from Johannesburg. It is thanks to this experience that her practice explores black bodies in space, using graphic art and architecture to critique spatial constructs. Her project Tales of Vulnerability in particular uses an original surrealist collage as a critical architectural tactic to capture and show the vulnerability of black female bodies in urban-rural transit areas.
