CARLA ACCARDI

BORN
LIVES&WORKS
1924, Trapani, Italy
2014, Rome, Italy

Undisputed protagonist of abstract art since 1947 – the year she joined Forma 1 art group – Carla Accardi elaborated a personal language based on the visual and expressive potential of the sign, a sign/colour repeated on surfaces as a sort of automatic writing that propagates in vortices or rhythms and thus defining images and space. Signs/colours grow larger and, occasionally, grow into self-referential shapes, with no discernible connection to figuration, and in constant relationship with the underlying material.
