JULIA PHILLIPS

BORN 1985, Hamburg, Germany
LIVES&WORKS Chicago, USA, Berlin, Germany

Inspired by tools and other functional objects, her sculptures are metaphors of social experiences and psychological expressions of a particular attention for power imbalances between individuals or between an individual and an institution. The art comprises ceramic pieces modelled on the artist’s body, with enamelled finishing cured by heating the piece more than once, at different temperatures. Many of the sculptures include recurring elements, such as handles or dice, to encourage the viewer to imagine a physical interaction with the art.
