LAVINIA SCHULZ / WALTER HOLDT

1896, Lübben (Spreewald), Germany/1899, Hamburg, Germany
1924, Hamburg, Germany

Partners in art and in life, this husband-and-wife couple revolutionised the world of dance and stage costume thanks to creations of incredible futuristic and visionary fantasy, which they wore themselves to dance choreographies of grotesque, quasi-masochistic style. Extremely committed to this form of art, they pushed themselves to the limits of Expressionism, only to later disavow it, and embrace the idea of a society where money wasn’t needed, and private property abolished. A society where each person could have their needs met.
