BORN
LIVES&WORKS
1647, Frankfurt am Main, Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire (present-day Germany)
1717, Amsterdam, Dutch Republic (present-day The Netherlands)

Born into a Calvinist family of painters, engravers and chalcographers, Maria Sibylla Merian, endowed with great talent, curiosity and determination, has access to studies and learns the graphic arts in her father’s workshop. Since she was a young girl, fascinated by the collections of flowers and butterflies, she will become one of the greatest designers and researchers of insects in history. The most fascinating feature of her work is her progress between rigorous observation and detailed recording by graphic means of every detail. In an era hostile to female work and intellectual development, Merian faces publishing challenges, research expeditions to South America, establishes herself as an entrepreneur, scientist and artist, also devoting herself to her daughters and their education.
