An American artist of Iranian origins, Hovsepian brings to the fore the materiality and physicality of photography by working with film cameras and photosensitive paper, using her body together with various objects to produce cerebral and sensual images. Disturbing and subtle, Hovsepian’s work reflects a deep knowledge of the history and theory of photography, a medium that the artist at the same time deconstructs, constantly questioning it. The investigation into vulnerability and the fine line between permanence and precariousness is at the center of her work, influenced in recent years by readings on feminist theories, in particular Hélène Cixous’ essays on the intrinsic relationship between body and language.
